Boosting Your Alpha Brainwaves

Everyone goes through periods when they feel unmotivated; disinterested; or downright depressed. During these times, it can be really hard to give yourself that pep talk you need to carry on again and start taking steps toward success. What if I told you that you can stimulate your brain in a way that helps to block these feelings – make you feel more creative and empowered? It’s true!

In order to learn how you can stimulate your brain and rewire it with a success mindset, we must first begin to understand what alpha brainwaves are.

Your brain is always on, whether you feel like it is or not. Yes, even when you’re sleeping, it’s communicating millions of messages a second to the rest of your body so you can move, breathe, dream, feel, and more. This type of communication within the brain creates patterns that look like waves – which is exactly why we call them “brain waves.”

Alpha Brainwaves

Alpha brainwaves were first discovered in 1924 by Hans Berger, a German psychiatrist (also the inventor of electroencephalography, or EEG – the method we use to read brainwaves still today). Our brain produces alpha waves when our minds are relaxed and not working very hard to product a lot of information, like when we are daydreaming or meditating.

Studies show that alpha brain wave activity is linked to a significant reduction in stress, anxiety, and discomfort while linked to an increase in the function of memory. Scientists have also found that working your alpha brainwaves can increase creativity by an average of 7.4%. Additionally, there is research that supports the claim that people with depression have suppressed alpha wave activity; suggesting that by improving alpha brainwave activity, they may be able to better control their mood!

Controlling Your Brainwaves

The different types of brainwaves that your brain produces work separately in some ways – they occur at different times, when we are doing different things – but ultimately, they work together to form who you are.

For example, if we could just sharpen our alpha brainwaves couldn’t we effectively begin to take control of our brains?

Here are a few ways you can enhance your alpha brainwaves and begin to feel more creative, joyful, motivated, and inspired:

Meditation – You only need to spend as few as 5 to 10-minutes a day meditating for your mind and body to feel the effects. Take a little bit of time out of your daily routine to sit in a quiet room, maybe play some relaxing music, and try to clear your mind of the day’s worries. Be completely present.

Breathing Exercises – Breathe deeply in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. This type of breathing exercise is used to slow the heart rate and help clear your mind by connecting it to your breathing pattern.

Take a Bath – Fill a bath with warm water and light some candles. If you can, try to practice deep breathing exercises and/or meditate during this time.

Practice Yoga – Yoga’s central focus is a mind-body connection that promotes clarity in the self and in life. Practicing yoga, even just for a few minutes a day, can boost those alpha waves.

Hypnosis – One of the most efficient ways to directly target your alpha wave production is through hypnosis with a well-trained professional.

The thought that we are victims to our minds is quickly becoming outdated. Our minds are malleable – they can be changed and reformed if we only work to do so. Sometimes, they change without us being able to control it (through trauma, addiction, or some other exterior force) but if the brain can go one way, it can most certainly go the other.
